What subject do you teach?
I teach Physical Education for grades 4-7.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
My PE teachers and coaches were some of my biggest role models when I was growing up, and they had a strong influence on my decision to become a teacher. I wanted to have that same positive impact on my students that they had on me. Teaching PE has allowed me to combine my love of sports with my passion for working with young people, and after 30+ years, I still enjoy coming to school and working.
What is your favorite part about being a teacher?
My favorite part about being a teacher is the relationships I build with my students. I enjoy watching them grow, improve, and gain confidence. It is especially rewarding to see students years later and hear about what they are doing and how they are doing. Knowing that I have had a positive impact on students is what makes teaching so rewarding for me.
What is one thing you hope your students learn from you this year?
One thing I hope my students learn from me this year is the importance of perseverance. Not everything is going to be easy, and I want my students to understand that it is okay to struggle or make mistakes as long as they keep working and do not give up.
What is one piece of advice you would give to students?
My advice to my students would be to always give your best effort and never be afraid to make mistakes. You will not always be the best at everything you try, but if you work hard, learn from your mistakes, and keep trying, you will continue to improve. Most importantly, believe in yourself!
What is one fun fact about you that you want the BMS community to know?
A fun fact about me is that I grew up in Bellingham and still live here today. My wife and I went to high school together, and both of our children went through the school system. This community has truly been a big part of my life.
