BMS Families,
As students in grades 4–7 continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally, they are learning important lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. These years bring new expectations, changing friendships, increased independence, and challenges that can sometimes feel overwhelming. At Bellingham Memorial School, we believe that one of the most important skills we can help students develop is perseverance—the ability to keep trying, learn from setbacks, and move forward when things get difficult.
As a school, we have a responsibility to provide students with meaningful academic and social challenges that encourage growth. Learning something new, working through a difficult assignment, navigating a disagreement with a friend, or receiving feedback can all be uncomfortable experiences. However, these moments also provide valuable opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Our goal is not to remove every obstacle from a student's path, but to provide the guidance, encouragement, and support they need to learn how to navigate those obstacles successfully.
Families play an equally important role in this process. The conversations we have with students at home can help shape how they respond to frustration, disappointment, and uncertainty. When your child encounters a difficult situation, consider using questions and statements such as:
-
“What did you learn from this experience?” Help your child see mistakes and setbacks as opportunities to grow rather than as signs of failure.
-
“What could you try differently next time?” Encourage problem-solving and reflection instead of immediately providing the solution.
-
“I know this is difficult, but I believe you can work through it.” Remind your child that you have confidence in their ability to persevere, even when the outcome is uncertain.
-
“What part of this situation can you control?” Help students focus on their own choices, effort, and responses rather than on the actions of others.
-
“It is okay to ask for help.” Reinforce that perseverance does not mean doing everything alone. Seeking support, listening to feedback, and knowing when to ask for assistance are important strengths.
As we continue our work at BMS, we want every student to feel a sense of belonging, experience meaningful challenges, and recognize that growth often happens when we step outside our comfort zones. Together, we can help students understand that success is not about getting everything right the first time. It is about showing up, putting forth effort, learning from experiences, and continuing to move forward.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Josh
