BMS Families,
As we enter our eighth week of school, we have established many of the routines and expectations that help make Bellingham Memorial School a positive and productive learning environment. Now, our focus continues to shift toward what happens within those routines: creating meaningful learning experiences that challenge students to think critically, engage actively, share their ideas, and take academic risks.
Rigor is not simply about making schoolwork harder or assigning more work. It is about providing students with opportunities to think deeply, make connections, solve problems, learn from mistakes, and apply their knowledge in new ways. These experiences may sometimes feel challenging, and that is an important part of the learning process. When students are encouraged to persevere through difficulty while receiving the support they need, they begin to develop the confidence and skills necessary for continued growth.
At BMS, we believe that students deserve both high expectations and a caring community that supports them along the way. Our responsibility is to create classrooms where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their thinking, learning from one another, and trying again when something does not come easily. We want students to understand that learning is not always about finding the right answer immediately; it is also about the thinking, effort, and reflection that lead them there.
Families can reinforce this message at home by asking questions that go beyond grades and completed assignments. Ask your child what challenged them during the school day, what they learned from a mistake, or when they had an opportunity to think differently about a problem. These conversations help students recognize that growth comes not only from what they accomplish, but also from how they approach the learning process.
As we continue through the school year, our goal remains to challenge and support every student as they grow academically, socially, and personally. By embracing perseverance, accountability, integrity, and respect, we can continue building a school community where students are encouraged to take risks, meet challenges, and discover what they are capable of achieving.
Have a great weekend!
